Re-enjoying soundtracks

Posted in Music

There is something wonderful about listening to a game soundtracks, they have the great ability to trigger our memories

  • maybe taking you back to a game you have recently completed
  • maybe a game that you played in your youth
  • maybe it reminds you of a certain area or dungeon from a MMO
  • maybe they just trigger other memories from different periods of your life.

So for this post I thought I’d share some of my favourite game music.

Planetside

Planetside was one of my main MMO’s, the music was larger than life with a heavily military undertones. While playing the music was allocated to regions, but would also change as a fighting increased, ultimately blending into music that indicated victory or defeat.

Streets of Rage

The Streets of Rage music was great, the Yuzo Koshiro chip-tune tracks are instantly recognisable and have stuck with me for years.
Given the games had limited space for music, and the music had a limited note range, the soundtracks never felt as if they were repetitive to the point of annoyance, which if you listen to many game tracks from the same era they would likely force you to switch the game off for some respite.

The Chronicles of Spellborn

A unique game setting, with a unique combat system and artwork style.
The Chronicles of Spellborn was a game that I felt didn’t shy away from darker world elements, this also tied into the artwork style that blended the fantasy setting into something more rugged.

Command and Conquer

The C&C soundtrack was a wonderful experience, I always enjoyed the fact the game had the two paths each feeling different and the music through-out the series cemented the different tone of each.

The Secret World

The Secret World needed a theme that would allude to the cloaked underworld that exists just beneath the surface of our world, the power that was hided from everyday life.
For me the title theme managed to nail that vision rather nicely in my opinion and even though the game has relaunched as The Secret World Legends it is still one of my favourite MMO intro/main pieces.

More?

If you enjoy MMO soundtracks then I strongly advise you to check out the Battle Bards Postcast https://twitter.com/battlebardscast it’s the world’s only podcast that is centered around MMO music.
Each episode the trio of hosts take you on a journey through different MMO soundscapes.

A mixture of things

My whistle stop update which maybe more than I have written in ages.

Since my list post featured some music, I thought I’d share a little more with you.
I can’t remember how but I discovered Postmodern Jukebox earlier this year and even though I don’t know/like all the songs I find the concept of taking a song and giving it a retro feel it’s rather awesome, especially when you can listen and attempt to guess the style/period they are mimicking.

Blogging

I’ve been trying to get into blogging with more frequency, partly inspired by all those folks who are taking part in Blaugust. I’ve attempted to read as many of the blogs as possible and of course commenting where I see fit. I tend to browse my RSS reader in the evenings so often end up having to catch up on the last batch of yesterdays posts, but they are all worth it.

As I alluded before my work load has calmed down a little now so I’m aiming to set time aside for blogging related activities.

Paragon Chat

I thought I’d blogged about Paragon chat, but maybe I dreamt about blogging about it.
Anyway you’ll have most likely seen news about the Paragon Chat application that has been constructed to allow you to chat with other Titan network members while using an avatar created in the City of Heroes/Villains game and walking around the environments.

I’ve been in a number of times and it still doesn’t get boring, of course there aren’t any interactive elements, powers or travel systems, but it’s great to natter with like minded folks who think the same as you and miss the crap out of the game.

Manager

I have heard the same blurb spouted from numerous different people in my years working in IT:

“there will be a non-managerial technical path for Developers to focus on that allows them to specialise rather than manage”

This always turns out to be bullshit as companies don’t want to have two streams of job roles to maintain, so to progress you are usually pushed into managing people or stay where you are.

In the last 12 months I have moved from a purely technical role to one that has elements of line management attached. I knew this when I applied, however I find it all rather new and terrifying.  Of course the worse part is the lack of any guidance and support in this role as there is lack of not caring as you’re a manager it’s your responsibility to sort stuff out.

Gaming

I’m still enjoying Big Pharma and have been spending a bit of time in World of Tanks, who are celebrating their 5th anniversary.
I do want to try and get back into a MMO but I struggle to get into then now-a-days, we’ll see if anything draws my attention.

But at least it’s Friday YAY \o/
But I’m on call 🙁

Everybody’s gone to the console?

Posted in Gaming, and Music

everyonesI hoped that Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture from ‘The Chinese Room’, would show signs of a release on the PC, but as we stand on the eve of the games launch it would seem the partnership with Sony Santa Monica means the game is Playstation 4 bound and no other platforms are in scope.

The exclusive nature of triple A titles usually bugs me but there is usually a large cash incentive in the mix somewhere but with a game partly developed by an Indie studio I find the locked to one platform a weird stance. However I wish the Devs good luck with the launch but sadly I’m not going to part with over £300 to play one game not matter how good it looks and sounds.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a PC release in the future.

Additional Music

katzenjammerAs was looking at tour dates for some bands, I often find myself looking up other bands who are also touring the local venues. It’s sometimes good to find the bands you’ve missed tour information about, also you can discover some new gems and that’s what happened this time. So over the last week i’ve bought all 3 of the KatzenJammer albums which all of the family appear to enjoy listening to and went down well mixed into a playlist for car journeys.

On hearing a few of the songs they reminded me of the fantastic band DeVotchKa who I’ve had the pleasure to see live twice (If you’ve ever watched the film Little Miss Sunshine you will most likely have heard them). The mixture of instruments gives the music a good mix when you approach an album.
However unlike DeVotchKa who mostly swap to alternative instruments, KatzenJammer share the instruments and vocals on most tracks, which it gives each song an unique feel.

So now the question is do we go to Bristol in November to see them?

A good friend tagged me to list 15 of the most influential/favourite albums in my life, I it was a very tough task to just pick 15 and there are many more on my list that I’ll no doubt kick myself for forgetting in a weeks time.

Wow! I’m so with the times 🙂

Aural delights

Posted in Music

This post is going to be about game music I’ve recently bought.

The Elder Scrolls Online soundtrack

I picked up The Elder Scrolls Online soundtrack for a smashing £7.49, which considering there are 47 tracks on the two and a half hour long album, isn’t completely bad value for money. Admittedly half of tracks last between 1 to 2 minutes, very incidental pieces when placed next to the 6 minute long set pieces whose aim is to enhance thoughts of certain in-game locations.

Many of the in game lore tracks feature Malukah who rose to fame after recording a cover of “The Dragonborn Comes” amongst others, she also has a cameo in the game as a bard.
You can hear one of the tracks below and you can download it here http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-gb/media/malukah

This track is only 1:47 long but is often one of the first I hear on entering Cyrodiil for a spot of PvP, it’s great for getting you into the mood for battle.

Transistor

I finally completed Super Giant’s Transistor, which was fantastic. I was worried that the game was going to be too similar to Bastion but despite the camera angle and art work the game mechanics are different enough to game this game unique.

The soundtrack is rather awesome again featuring the talents of Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett, the music features multiple instruments including harps, accordions, guitars, mandolins and electric piano. As with Bastion the music is designed to fit into the story and flows differently depending on what is going on. In an interview over at the Playstation blog, Darrren tells how all the music was created in his apartment even to the point where the vocals were all recorded in his closet (source).

You can find the whole soundtrack on bandcamp and Youtube if you fancy a listen:
