Like a boss fight

I’m going with one of Belghast suggested topics about Boss fights, the raid that I remember the most is from the Rikti War zone in City of Heroes/Villains.
The Lady Grey Task Force was one of the first Task Force in the City of games that allowed both Heroes and Villains to team up co-operatively. Initiated in the Rikti War Zone the task force was for 8 persons and tasked the players with repelling an alien invasion.

Four riders

Once started the raid consisted of 5 stages there are two fights that I found challenging and enjoyable. The first is a fight against 4 of the Rikti greatest warriors who has been given names designed to invoke fear into the heart of humans.They are referred to as the riders and take the names War, Famine, Pestilence & Death.

Fighting them starts off easy as you only face one, but the fight changes as the number increases with each encounter, so that in the last battle you end up fighting all four bosses at once.


The central part of the story is focused on the last Rikti Invasion attempt and how the Omega Team (a group of 50 heroes) led by Hero 1, travelled through a portal to the Rikti home-world and destroyed it on the other-side.

However the sacrifice of the original team came at a cost and those thought lost were either killed or captured by the Rikti, corrupted and transformed.

The final fight

Rikti_HonoreeThe raid ends bit taking the fight right to door step of the Raiding Rikti force who are trying to open a new portal to the Rikti homeworld which could bring through their most powerful warrior.
The project is being overseen by Lord of War: Hro’Dtohz who is the lord of the Rikti military caste, him and his plan must be stopped before the Honoree travels to Earth.

You arrive too late and while you are defeating Hro’Dtohz the portal is activated and The Honoree is brought through. As the name and visuals suggest this warrior isn’t Rikti in nature and is in-fact the thought lost Hero 1.

As you are fighting it becomes clear that despite the Rikti influence there is still some of the Hero left, as the battle progresses the internal struggle becomes apparent. Sadly the mind-controlling is too strong and you have to take the Honoree down.

Let us not mourn for his fall, for even with all the alien science bent to break his will, he fought to retain some of his humanity. Perhaps one day, he can be restored. If that day comes, it will be because of your bravery and valour.
Though tinged with sorrow, this is indeed a moment of triumph, your moment of triumph. For you have fought against all odds and saved all of us, and may now stand with your heads held high amongst your peers.

Life after patch 3.1.1

So 3.1.1 brought with it a shake up of the PvP campaigns, I have to say that I’m quite happy with this as it means the tier reward payouts are more frequent plus the goals feel more achievable.
So gone are the previous ten 90 day campaigns and they have been replaced by the following:

  • Haderus: 7 day Campaign
  • Chillrend: 14 day Campaign
  • Thornblade: 30 day Campaign
  • Bow of Shadows: 5 day Campaign (vet only)
  • Blackwater Blade: 5 day Campaign (non-vet only)

Now they just need to resolve the random disconnect and bow damage bugs in PvP.

Just dyeing to tell you

Additionally one of the most anticipated features in the ESO Patch was the Dyes for clothing. Now that I have finally had chance to play around with the system here are my thoughts.

The unlocking of new colours is done by earning certain achievements, which is a nice system that rewards those who play through the game and indulge in exploration and quest completion. The palette is quite subdued with most of the colours being in keeping with the aesthetic of the game world.

Each piece of armour has 3 elements that can be dyed uniformly using a paint tool or use a brush to paint them individually, these are split into two main colours for the item plus one for the trim.

So far I have only seen a handful of “power-rangers” clothing schemes thank goodness.

Got your back

If there is ever a roll in MMOs that I favour the most it is usually the supporting class. Whether a healer, debuffer or buffer, generally I tend to gravitate to one of those roles.This topic came after reading a blog post by Talarian over at Gamer by Design in which the holy trinity is discussed along with how the debuff/buff roles have now been absorbed in the trinity roles.
I enjoy games that allow you to debuff the enemy as it’s usually beneficial no matter the size of group you are in, plus it’s a nice way to contribute to fights without feeling underpowered in terms of DPS.

My forte seems to be in roles that give me a good overview of the battle, scouting out locations of enemies, watching for incoming additional enemies during boss fights, team buff/health monitoring, generally just more awareness of the situation in general.
That’s not to say I can’t find enjoyable game-play without these elements they are by far the ones that I excel at the most.


I fancied changing my avatar that I use around the interwebs, I managed to dig up an old concept icon that I created in 2005, to cater for some of the newer 2.0 websites that have a minimal size of 200px so increase the image to 256px.

ESO Patch 1.3.3

So important changes have gone into Elder Scrolls Online in the latest patch that dropped into the NA servers yesterday and EU servers today.

This patch is huge and contains many balancing alterations, bug fixes and quality of life changes. I shan’t list them all out as you can read the patch notes yourselves, but here are some key features for me:

  • PvP
    • the closure of all active PvP campaigns and granting everyone a free Campaign Home assignment
    • The number of the PvP campaigns has been changed giving more focus on smaller durations bigger fights
    • Weapon swapping has been improved ( this bugged me)
    • Fixed floating postern doors in PvP
    • Grand soul gems can not drop in war bags
    • Restoration Staff – Grand Healing: This ability now shows green ring on the ground when cast by an ally in Cyrodiil.
  • “NPCs that drink from bottles will now have the bottle line up with their mouth. They will no longer have a drinking problem.YAY for Airplane! references
  • Updated the sound you hear when you attempt to perform an ability, but you don’t have enough magicka or stamina.
  • An almost free respec will be in for 1 week at the cost of 1 gold, but in the future the standard cost will be reduced
  • The ash pile left by disintegrated enemies now glows if it is lootable.
  • Potency Runes will now stack up to 100

Inspiration strikes

Part of the curse of having played City of Heroes\Villains is that I frequently get inspiration for new characters in the most unlikely locations. The one below came to me in a supermarket with the exclamation “I just had a great idea for a new character” despite the game being closed for over a year.

I have only just got around to designing the character inspired by a box of dark chocolates, I present to you ….

Thank goodness for Titan Icon that at least allows me to design the would-be characters and I’m very thankful for it.

I keep a copy of the game installed just for playing around in the costume creator, I know many other players can’t face keeping the game installed which is understandable give the history.

There is nothing quite like a concept character to drawn you into a different play-style and that is where the game excelled. I have mentioned before the choice of primary and secondary power-sets gave a level of freedom that more recent MMOs haven’t come close to matching, combined with a lower number of character slots means trying different combinations isn’t always easy in these MMOs.

Do you ever roll a concept character just for giggles? Go with a build that is against the grain?
